What people love about Wood...
Year of the Lizard and Earth Trust
For over 10 years now, Wood Festival has chosen to highlight an endangered species or creature as part of the year’s festivities, from the red kite to the damselfly. As part of this, we have tried to link up with suitable charities who can help educate us about conservation, and help to foster a continuing connection with nature.
This year, the winner was our cold-blooded friend the lizard, Wood’s first ever reptile representative! There’s already a catchy song by Nick Cope to soundtrack the partnership (“I’m a Little Lizard”, of course), but the question remained: do lizards actually live in this area?
Well, early in 2025, volunteers for local charity Earth Trust spotted four common lizards lurking on their farmland (pictured above on a log, they clearly love Wood too) - the presence of lizards here is considered an indicator of ecological health. Earth Trust is best known for their stewardship of the famous Wittenham Clumps, also the home of the fantastic Earth Trust Centre, but they also look after substantial amounts of woodland, wetlands, wildflower meadows and farmland.
For over 40 years, Earth Trust has been providing and championing accessible natural green spaces and running inspiring, award-winning programmes to help people connect with nature and the environment and we’re delighted to be supporting them.
